Signs of change for Irish roads

February 17, 2011

By Staff Reporter

Traditionally, Irish signposts have been bilingual, but now signage will be in Irish only. English will also be removed from government documents and official ordinance survey maps.
The ban, which came into force on Monday, affects more than 2,300 roads across Irish speaking areas in the west, southwest and north of Ireland, as well as Gaeltacht areas in Meath and Wexford.
While the ban may be good news for Ireland’s 55,000 Irish-speakers, there are fears that it may prove off-putting to international tourists.
