28-year-old Corcoran was awarded “Best director of a short Film,” last Saturday at the New York International Independent film and video festival for his 10-minute tale “Virtues of a Sinner.”
His was the only Irish short selected for the festival, which showcased over 300 films from around the world including features, shorts, documentaries and animations.
The film, which Dubliner Corcoran wrote for as part of an editing training class, has attracted significant media attention in Ireland because of the severe time constraints under which it was produced.
Corcoran wrote, cast, designed and edited the film in less than a week. The film was shot over one day.
“I’m absolutely thrilled, it’s unbelievable,” Corcoran said in an interview with the Echo.
“I think one of the reasons I won was because of the time constraints. It was a pretty crazy affair. We started shooting at 8:30 in the morning and were sending it off, finished, to London by 5 p.m.”
“Virtues of a Sinner,” is a humorous tale of how God and Satan’s angels decide on the fate of deceased soles. Starring Irish actors Karl Shiels, Pat McGrath and Ned Dennehy of “King Arthur,” the film has received critical acclaim for its clever dialogue.
Corcoran’s first short film, “Poultry in Motion,” was the audience Award winner at the Corto Imola film festival in 2002.
