“They suffered a great deal in the earthquake,” said co-organizer Jim Whelan, “not just in terms of lives lost but also in the destruction of property.”
The concert, which will begin at 2 p.m. at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Auditorium, 10 County Rd., Tenafly, will feature Gabriel Donoghue, Donie Carroll and the Washington Harp Shamrock Orchestra, Ciar_n Sheehan, the Bergen Irish Pipe Band, the McLaughlin School of Irish Step Dancing and Donny Quinn.
“Sister Trinity, who runs the gift shop, has been running suppers over there for years,” said native New Yorker Whelan about his co-organizer.
“They’re terrific,” added Whelan about the 47 nuns at the convent that caters to those in the order who need some care and assistance. Their number includes 105-year-old County Galway native Sister Mary Victor Waters, who was profiled recently in the Echo.
