Sunday’s last event on the program, the Senior Football Div. 2
tie pitting Longford against Sligo, was postponed with less than 10 minutes remaining due to unsuitable weather conditions.
It was a shame that this game had to be wrapped up early, as an exciting game of football was in full swing. Referee Emmet McCormack made the intelligent decision of calling a halt to proceedings as the thunder and lightening that reigned over Gaelic Park made conditions too dangerous for staging a game.
Both sides held the lead at various stages throughout the tie, with the halftime score being 2-5 to 0-6 in favor of Longford. Sligo came out on the attack for the second half and points from Enda Henry, who had been having a fine game up until then, brought the game back into Sligo’s reach.
For the record, the abandoned game finished in Longford’s favor by a score of 3-7 to 1-11, though the game will be replayed in its entirety at a later date.
