Soccer Roundup Starting Gate Harps win Bronx Irish title

February 16, 2011

By Staff Reporter

The Starting Gate Harps finally annexed their first Bronx Irish Soccer League title when they clinched the Cup final with a 3-0 victory over the Southbend at the weekend.

A moment of handball madness in the Southbend penalty area gave Ann Carr the opportunity to convert the resulting penalty, leaving the Harps a goal up at the break. With the Southbend minus a number of notable starters, their main scoring threat, Petrona Kemp, was well shackled by the Harps backline, and the Queens women always looked like winning.

A great steal from Carr gave the Harps their second goal. That was followed by her third to wrap up a thoroughly deserving win that left a delighted Harps to crack open the champagne.
