Something’s not nice

The band shooting publicity stills at a photo studio in Nice when someone had the bright idea that they should go outside for a few snaps. The Edge — a brilliant guitarist but obviously no security expert — didn?t bother to bring his bag outside with him, even though it contained a complete master cut of the new record. (Oops.) Apparently, a sticky-fingered onlooker couldn?t resist the call of the music.
When the theft was discovered, someone called le police, who sealed off le building tout suite. But despite the cops best efforts, le thief et la disc vanished into le thin air.
Oh, all right, I?ll stop showing off with my high school French, cheries. (Oops.) The band has other copies of the album master, so the album can be completed as scheduled. But the big fear is that the new material will wind up on the internet, which would take a big bite out of record sales. Where?s Inspector Javert when you need him?
The Edge is, understandably, veryveryvery annoyed. In an interview posted on the band?s official website, he said, ?A large slice of two years work lifted via a piece of round plastic. It doesn’t seem credible but that’s what’s just happened to us . . . and it was my CD.’
The theft of the tape recalls the drama surrounding the band?s last alum, ?All That You Can?t Leave Behind.? In that instance, the band freaked out when someone nicked Bono?s notebook computer, which contained all of the lyrics for the album. It was eventually returned to the singer, and the rest, as they say, is Grammy history. But I can?t help thinking that the second occurrence smacks of a publicity stunt . . .
