Spain defeated Japan, 4-0, in Nigeria last weekend to win the 1999 FIFA World Youth Cup for the first time.

Bakero (5th), Pablo Coira (14th, 33rd) and Gabri (51st) ended Japan’s fairy-tale run in Saturday’s final, while preserving the Spaniards’ unbeaten record in the 24-nation championship.

Mali, who lost, 3-1, to Spain in the semifinals, clinched third-place for Africa with a 1-0 decision over 1997 runners-up Uruguay. Seydou Keita (30th) scored.
