There’s little love lost between the two heartthrobs, who are apparently in hot competition for the Yankee movie dollar. That, and bitchy sound bytes on “Entertainment Tonight.”
Russell, who seems to have mellowed slightly since marrying his long-time sweetie, Danielle Spencer — meaning he hasn’t punched any bouncers lately — was bemused when he heard about Gibson’s plan to release his new movie, “The Passion,” without subtitles. The film, which chronicles the last few hours in the life of Christ, has been the target of protests from groups that consider it anti-Semitic.
“He spent $25 million making a movie that’s shot in Aramaic and Latin and he’s intending to release it without subtitles?” sniped Crowe during a recent interview. “Mr. Gibson, get off the glue!”
In more “Passion” news, we hear that Mel and his film company, Icon Productions, are having a tough time finding a distributor for the controversial film. Major studios, who saw what happened with Martin Scorsese’s “Last temptation of Christ,” are said to be shying away from being associated with a film that is sure to arouse angry demonstrations and possible boycotts. It’s much easier to release uplifting character studies like “Old Skool” and “Kangaroo Jack.”
