Tax revenues well off

After a potential merger between the Bank of Ireland and Allied Irish Banks was stopped last week by the Irish Competitions Authority, the consumer affairs director, Carmel Foley, has welcomed the Authority’s proposed study into the banking sector.

“In deciding what sectors to study, the authority takes account of the importance of the sector for the economy, indicators of the level of competition, the existence of public or private barriers to entry, and the public interest generally,” Foley said.
