That people are angry and nervous is entirely understandable. That their fears are directed at the government is no surprise.
And yet is it difficult to forget the overwhelming nature of the downturn in an Irish economy that has taken a harder hit than most EU countries and shows no sign of moving towards meaningful recovery, most especially in the matter of jobs.
It may well be bigger than any one government can deal with, at least quickly.
What is now coming down the track for Ireland’s post-tiger generation is a budget that will likely put all others of past years in the shade in terms of cuts and penalties.
As a result, it is certain that people will take to the streets again, if not the barricades.
What is looming ahead is a winter of discontent that will challenge the definitional limits even that well worn line.
