The Tigers’ 90-81 victory over St. Vincent’s was masterminded by player-coach Chris Craig and his former college teammate at Texas-El Paso, Roy Smallwood.
Smallwood hit 31 points to take the MVP award, getting the better of his matchup with Paul Tonkovich. The top scorer for St. Vincent’s was Peter Madsen with 22.
There was to be no record-breaking three titles in a row for UL Aughinish, who were surprisingly beaten in the women’s decider by Dart Killester. Favored to make it an unprecedented hat trick of cup wins and to maintain an unbeaten record that stretched back to December 2002, UL Aughinish lost 57-53.
Catriona White, who earned the MVP award, led the winners with 13 points, while Suzanne Maguire had 10. Nessa O’Keeffe looked to have supplied the impetus when she gave UL a 5-point lead with just over 6 minutes remaining, but Killester finished the stronger with Maguire and Ashley Luke hitting free throws in the closing seconds.
