The FAI’s first-ever U-21 game was against Northern Ireland 26 years ago this month in March 1978. Givens, the former international striker, said: “The professionalism the lads showed in all three games was exceptional. To come out here and in four days get good results against Portugal, Italy and Madeira, without conceding a goal is something we have to be pleased with.”
The only tournament the Irish senior team has ever won was the Triangular Icelandic Tournament in 1986.

KEANE AWAITS UEFA VERDICT
Roy Keane is rarely out of the news. Last week it was the speculation that the Corkman may return to the Irish squad. Now his European career with Manchester United may be over, for this season at least. Keane will know on Friday what type of ban he gets from UEFA after being sent off against FC Porto last week. Normally a red card incurs a one-match ban, but there is speculation that UEFA may come down hard on the Corkman as last week’s dismissal was Keane’s 11th red card while playing for United. If Keane gets a three-match ban, it that would rule him out of the Champions League quarterfinals, if United manage to beat Porto in the second leg at Old Trafford next week. Keane did play in the 1994 World Cup, but of course was sent home from Saipan in 2002. He also missed United’s Champions League success in 1999 when he was also suspended.

LIMERICK BOXER LEE
QUALIFIES FOR ATHENS
Ireland is guaranteed to have one boxer at the Olympic Games in Athens later this year. Nineteen-year-old Andy Lee from the St. Francis Boxing Club in Limerick took bronze when he beat Nikola Sjeklosha of Serbia Montenegro in a qualifying competition in Croatia last week. Lee did have an opportunity to win silver, but was beaten by Germany’s Lukas Wilaschek in the semifinals on Friday. In the past every country could send a boxer for every weight to the Olympics, but with the number of new countries in Easter Europe growing all the time, qualification was required.
