U.S. firms fueling Dublin job boom

DUBLIN — Major expansions of their Irish operations by two U.S. companies will create an extra 900 jobs in the Dublin area, the IDA announced last week.

Ascend Communications will invest more than $41 million to make Blanchardstown its European center for manufacturing, customer and technical support and shared services for the telecommunications industry.

The new development for the ten year old California company will employ 580. Ascend’s equipment supports more than 30 million Internet connections daily on a worldwide basis.

Quintiles pharmaceutical is to spend more than $4 million doubling the size of its operation in Fairview and recruiting 320 new staff.

The company is the world’s largest contract pharmaceutical organization providing a range of services related to the clinical trials of new drugs being developed by pharmaceutical companies.

This will be the third expansion from Quintiles in Ireland since it established its operation at East Point, Fairview, in 1990.
