The Wexford-born Barry has traditionally been known as the “Father of the United States Navy.”
The Resolution, was reintroduced in the House by New York Rep. Peter King last year. The Ancient Order of Hibernians, the Ladies AOH and the Irish Brigade Association were the prime backers for the congressional effort.
Rep. John McHugh, chairman of the House Armed Services Sub-Committee, brought the resolution to the House floor for a voice vote.
“The passage of this resolution is a major contribution in assuring that Commodore John Barry receives his rightful place in American history,” said Mike Kearney, chairman of the New York State AOH board’s Commodore John Barry Committee.
