Vodafone fears

Third generation cell phone technology may not be developed in Ireland by Vodafone, say experts who watch the market sector.

Vodafone, which entered the Irish market by acquiring Eircell, the former state-owned mobile operation, won a month-long extension for the third-generation license fee deadline on Monday.

Observers have expressed fears that the cell phone giant’s indecision is because it may want to develop what is known as “3G” (for third generation) technology elsewhere.

A Vodafone spokesperson said: “We decided we would seek the extension of time offered under the rules. The regulator has indeed granted us a month’s extension, by which time we will come back with our response.”
