Waterford stay in contention for playoffs

February 16, 2011

Still, Waterford got on top early with a free from Victor O’Shea and a point from play from John Gerrity. Waterford keeper Ian Duggan did well to deny Dan Liddy, but Clare entered the scoresheet when Liam O’Donoghue pointed the resultant 70. Waterford maintained their advantage through a less than scintillating first half, leading 0-6 to 0-2 after 30 minutes. Center back O’Shea and midfielder Shane Walsh were the key men for Waterford in the first half and they continued their fine play in the second.
Clare got great effort from Mike O’Halloran at midfield who had to be forced off the field late in the match after getting a bloody cut near his eye. O’Halloran was back on the pitch in a matter of minutes, his wound bandaged, but he’d done all he could for the Clare cause.
Waterford evened their record at 2-2, keeping their hopes alive in the B division. Ian Duggan had two key saves and Colin Ruth and Tomas Maher were able deputies for O’Shea, who not only shut down the dangerous Ger O’Halloran, but was a key component of the Waterford attack.
Shane Walsh got over some early shooting jitters to play a fine overall match for Waterford and John Redmond and Joe Walsh were always dangerous up front.
Clare fall to 2-2 and also remain in the playoff hunt as each match takes on added importance as we get deeper into the season.
