Waterford woes

February 17, 2011

By Staff Reporter

Waterford Wedgwood, the company that owns Waterford Crystal, last week announced a massive series of job cuts. The firm is trying to stabilize itself after a period in which both its sales and its share price have languished.
Waterford Wedgwood will cut 1800 jobs in total. One-third of its Irish workforce will go. The Irish redundancies will predominantly come at the company’s plant in Dungarvan, County Waterford, which will be closed for good. The firm’s flagship plant in Waterford City will also be affected, with 110 jobs to be cut.
The company is paring down its workforce in other countries too. Its Royal Doulton arm in the U.K. will lose 950 workers. The Rosenthal division in Germany will be reduced by 160. Other divisions will account for a further 200 job losses.
