Waters propels Lansdowne ruggers to second victory

February 16, 2011

By Staff Reporter

Waters, a long-time vet of the Lansdowne and New York Irish Rugby Clubs, delivered two quick tries in the opening minutes of Lansdowne’s victory, exploiting key overlaps and otherwise demonstrating what a burrowing shoulder and driving step makes of the opposition.
Lansdowne, staked to the early lead, then mounted back-breaking points on Hudson, as Johnny Coughlin kicked for seven on a penalty and conversions, and young Anthony O’Brien delivered a try in the corner. Couglin also kicked to touch in fine fashion, bravely inhaling several plowing tackles as the ball released. In the scrum, John Sullivan once again dominated the line-outs and pilfered enough Hudson ball to put a dint in their morale on that basis alone. The second half saw time for old boys Sean McCarthy and Horatio Cazarian, who spelled for players tiring in the Indian Summer heat.
The team’s next match is this Saturday in Van Cortlandt against the Danbury Rugby Club of Connecticut. That game presents one of two key matchups this season.
