DUBLIN — The hurlers of Wexford won their seventh Walsh Cup in a row when two late goals finished off Laois at Enniscorthy on Sunday. Strikes by Martin Byrne and Paul Finn made the difference as it finished 2-10 to 0-9, with Wexford finding it difficult to translate their superiority onto the scoreboard.
Veteran wing-back Larry O’Gorman was in superb form for the winners. However, manager Tony Dempsey will hardly have been satisfied with his forwards, who hit a total of 16 wides during the 70 minutes.
Meanwhile, Wicklow were too strong for Kildare in a highly competitive Kehoe Cup decider at Newbridge, where they came through by 2-13 to 1-14. Danny Curran was on the mark with two goals for Wicklow and Jonathan O’Neill had 8 points, all from frees.
In football, the 2000 All-Stars defeated their 1999 counterparts by 9-14 to 5-16 in an exhibition game in Dubai last week and Wexford had a shock 1-16 to 4-6 O’Byrne Cup quarterfinal success over Offaly at Bunclody.
