GREETINGS TO OUR
FRIENDS IN BRAZIL
Paul Durcan
A native and resident of Dublin, Paul Durcan is one of Ireland’s foremost contemporary writers, having published 17 collections of poetry. This 257-page collection of 100 poems is a work of tremendous imaginative power, and is Durcan’s attempt to fix the soul of his country at a particular time, the years of Mary Robinson’s presidency. The pain and recovery of Durcan’s inner odyssey are mirrored in the images of an Ireland awakening from the nightmare of its violent past, becoming freer and more cosmopolitan, and finding in Mary Robinson the unifying symbol for this more hopeful time. Published by Harvill Press and distributed by Farrar, Strauss & Giroux. 257 pp. $23.

Sheila Noonan’s second solo CD, "Radio Sweethearts" is a collection of folk songs that, according to John O’Regan of Folk Roots Magazine, "cry out for exposure." Noonan, daughter of famed accordionist Paddy, does just that in this album that has her, and her backing musicians, covering material from the works of Tommy Sands, Dougie MacLean and J.P. Cormier. The album is on the Kells Music label based in Garden City, L.I, Call (516) 328-7800.
AS IT IS IN HEAVEN
Niall Williams
The acclaimed author of "Four Letters of Love," Brian Williams has been busy again in his County Clare retreat and the result is his second romance novel, set in Ireland with a twist of Italian passion. Williams, and his American-born wife, Christine Breen, first came to public attention with four books on their family’s life in Clare. Warner Books. 310 pp. $23.
KIM ROBERTSON
The Spiral Gate
The publicity material promises a world of "mystery and mysticism" in harpist Robertson’s latest CD on the Narada label. But Robertson is no stranger to presenting her music in the material world, having even played on an episode of "Beverly Hills 90210" during a distinguished 20-year career. Narada is based at a more down-to-earth zip code, 53212. The address is 4650 North Port Washington Road, Milwaukee, WI, or call Sue Schrader or Lisa Samper at (414) 961-8350.
