LOCAL IRELAND ALMANAC
AND YEARBOOK OF FACTS 2000
We live in an age of increasing information and, in the views of many, declining knowledge. But the bare facts stand on their own merit no matter what the trends of the times and in this almanac there are pointers to just about everything you might want to know about contemporary Ireland — and then some. The Irish almanac is modeled on the popular U.S.-published almanacs — such as "The World Almanac" — that sell millions of copies every year and it covers a variety of subject areas including top news stories of the year past, sports, politics, business, arts, tourism and culture. Dufour Editions, Chester Springs, PA 19425. 493 pp. $17.95.
A U.S. SPY IN IRELAND
Martin S. Quigley
Much has been written about the activities of German spies in wartime, neutral Ireland, but relatively little has been penned about U.S. spying in de Valera’s Free State. In this book, Martin S. Quigley, describes how he was sent to Ireland in 1943 by the U.S. Office of Strategic Services — forerunner of the CIA — to investigate the views, official and otherwise, of Irish neutrality and Irish attitudes to the war. Quigley’s cover was that he was a commercial agent working for the U.S. film industry. The book aims at dispelling some of the myths surrounding wartime Irish neutrality. Irish Books and Media (IRISHBOOK@aol.com). 192 pp. $17.95.
