WILD DECEMBERS

Edna O’Brien

O’Brien charts the demise of relations between Joseph Brennan and Mick Bugler, the "warring sons of warring sons" in the countryside of western Ireland. It’s a work about land ownership and how it can tear people apart, and O’Brien makes it clear that love of land is as deep as love between people. With this book, O’Brien completes her loosely related trilogy of novels about modern Ireland. Houghton Mifflin. 259 pp. $24.
