THE TROUBLE WITH GUNS,

REPUBLICAN STRATEGY

AND THE PROVISIONAL IRA

Malachi O’Doherty

In light of current developments in Northern Ireland, this 222-page paperback makes interesting reading. It argues that the central aim of the armed struggle has been to create conditions that render an internal Northern Ireland settlement impossible, thus forcing a progression toward Irish unification as apparently the only option for the peace seekers. O’Doherty, who was born in Donegal, grew up as a Catholic nationalist in West Belfast. Price £11.99. Distributed in the U.S. by Dufour Editions, Chester Springs, PA 19425. OF AN IRISH UNIONIST

Basil McIvor

According to this 163-page paperback, the absence of Protestant liberals from active politics has been one of the most damaging aspects of the ongoing situation in Northern Ireland. McIvor is an exception, having entered Stormont as a Unionist MP in 1969. Eventually, McIvor found himself in the hot seat of minister of community relations in Brian Faulkner’s cabinet. After the fall of Stormont, McIvor returned to his job as a lawyer. This book is his memoirs. Price £12.99. Distributed in the U.S. by Dufour Editions, Chester Springs, PA 19425. For information, call (610) 458-5005.

THE RUBY

Aly Bain & Phil Cunningham

Two Scottish musicians, fiddle player Aly Bain and accordionist Phil Cunningham, have again teamed up to produce this CD of instrumental music. Bain was a founding member of The Boys of the Lough and Cunningham was a member of Silly Wizard. The collection includes slow airs, marches and strathspeys. Released by Green Linnet Records. For information, call Lisa Pardini at (203) 730-0333.

HERO

Michael McGlone

McGlone, an actor and singer-songwriter, starred in Ed Burns’s films "The Brothers McMullen" as Patrick McMullen and "She’s the One," as well as the HBO original movie "Subway Stories." Apart from his acting, McGlone has been focusing on his singer-songwriter career, having just recorded this eight-song CD. He has been described in Renegade Newsletter as having "powerful delivery" on this album, lending "an intense emotional edge to his good old-fashioned story songs." Released by MDM Records, P.O. Box 52, Syosset, NY 11791.
