Women’s Soccer Harps women hammer Velocity

In this clash, Harps hammered Velocity by seven goals to one. But it wasn’t as one-sided as the final score would suggest.

The first ten minutes was tight. The Harps started putting pressure on the Velocity defense, after 13 minutes Hilary Potkewitz hit a shot that went inches wide.

Then, on 15 minutes, the ball came in for the Harps and was handled in the square. Penalty for the Harps which was taken by Hilary Potkewitz who scored.

The Harps kept up the pressure and five minutes later Sandra Swinburne crossed the ball to Hilary who scored again.

The Velocity team came more into the game but failed to score. The score at half-time was 2-0 to the Harps.

The second half started with the Harps going forward. After 37 minutes a good cross by Miriam O’Brien to Jennifer Terranova who shot hard to goals but the keeper failed to hold and Sandra Swinburne was there to put the ball into the net.

The Harps kept up the pressure. After 42 minutes, a cross by Maire Flood was handled by the Velocity defense. A penalty to Harps which Sandra Swinburne scored, 4-0 to Harps.

After 47 minutes, a cross by Ronnie La Voun was met by Katie MacNeil who scored. The Velocity team tried to put pressure on the Harps but the Harps defense was unstoppable.

After 65 minutes Maire Flood’s shot came off the post and Sandra Swinburne was there to score her hat-trick. On 68 minutes a cross in by Sandra, the goalie failed to hold and Martina Duffy headed the ball home, 7-0 to Harps.

Next week’s schedule: 10 a.m., Lansdowne vs J.J. Gilligans; Beal Bocht vs Velocity. 11:30 a.m., Harps vs Fagan’s; Parlour Moms vs Fionas.

Gilligan’s 0, Fagan’s 0

This was a tight game. On 10 minutes Theresa Doyle had a shot saved by Fagan’s keeper. Gilligan’s kept up the pressure for the next 20 minutes but failed to score. The Fagan’s keeper, Helena Campion, made some good saves. Fagan’s came more into the game in the last 10 minutes of first half. Angie Allen had a shot that just went wide of the post. The half-time score was 0-0.

The second half started with Fagan’s going forward but failed to score. The Gilligan’s defense held a tight rein. On 55 minutes Maudy Lynn took a free kick from the 25 yard line but the Fagan’s defense cleared the ball.

The game ended with a 0-0 result.

Lansdowne 0, Parlour Mom’s 0

This was the first game of the season for the Lansdowne team. It was another tight game.

On 15 minutes, Missy Steven’s had a shot on goal which was saved on the line by the Lansdowne defense. On 20 minutes, Beth Roper had a shot on goal for the Lansdowne but the shot went inches wide. The first half ended 0-0.

The second half started with Parlour Mom’s going forward. On 37 minutes, Karen Rice had a shot from 20 yards that just whisked wide.

The Lansdowne team started going forward. On 47 minutes Mimi Boyle had a shot saved by keeper. Parlour Mom’s came forward on 53 minutes, shot by Lisa Moore was saved.

On 60 minutes, Lisa Moore had another shot on goal that whisked just over the bar. With two minutes to go, Wendy Hollender ran past two Lansdowne defenders only to put the ball inches wide. Full time score 0-0.

Beal Bocht, 1 Fiona’s 0

This was Fiona’s first game of the season. They could not field a team last week. It was good to see they had seven subs on Sunday.

Beal Bocht started well. On five minutes Orla Doyle had a shot hit off the crossbar. The Beal Bocht’s kept going forward but some good defensive play by Fiona’s kept them out.

On 20 minutes Mary Touhy had a shot saved by Rosie O’Reilly. The Fiona’s came into the game a bit more going forward but failed to score. On 30 minutes Patricia Thelwell gathered the ball from midfield and ran on to shoot from 30 yards, a rocket of a shot buried in the top left of the net, 1-0 to Beal Bocht..

In the second half, Beal Bocht started the way they played the first half, piling pressure on the Fiona’s defense who held up well.

On 50 minutes a good shot by Mary Touhy was cleared off the Fiona’s line. On 60 minutes Sophia Harvey had a shot saved by the keeper. Fiona’s played well in the last ten minutes going forward. A shot by Susan Fitzpatrick was well saved by Pauline Boylan. Neither team could score. The game ended 1-0 to Beal Bocht.
