Kilkenny freshman Mark Power of Wake Forest shot 67 to finish atop the leaderboard in the stroke competition of the East Lake Cup in Atlanta last week in men’s golf. Power’s card featured eight birdies, including five on the back nine, to put him two strokes in front of the runner-up. The results were then used to determine team seedings for the match play portion of the event, in which the Demon Deacons lost, 3-2, to both Oklahoma State and Vanderbilt. Power dropped matches to OSU’s Austin Eckroat, 3 and 2, and to Vanderbilt’s Harrison Ott, 4 and 2.

CROSS COUNTRY (MEN)
Iona’s Jack O’Leary got third place in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference championship run in Holmdel, New Jersey on Saturday. The senior from Killucan, Co. Westmeath reported in at 25:07.54 for 8,000 meters. Teammate Ehab El-Sandali got there ahead of him by mere milliseconds for the victory. The Gaels grabbed the first five finishing positions to take the team title back to New Rochelle, New York.
Sophie Murphy, of Iona’s women’s team, likewise was third to finish in the women’s heat. The Dublin junior needed 21:34.86 to complete 6,000 meters. The Gaels’ Egle Morenaite was the winner of this race in 21:18.13. Iona also was team champion here.
Providence College freshman Orla O’Connor was 33rd to finish in the Big East Conference championship race in Kenosha, Wisconsin on Saturday. The Waterford woman was timed in 23:29.1 for 6,000 meters. Villanova’s Lydia Olivere ran a winning 21:29.5. Providence finished fourth among teams, who were led by Butler.
FIELD HOCKEY
Monmouth University won the America East regular season championship by defeating Vermont, 4-0, in Burlington, Vermont on Friday. Freshman Yasmin Pratt of County Wicklow earned an assist on the final goal. Kate O’Hogan, a Dublin sophomore, was in goal for the Hawks and made one save. The Hawks (13-4) will host the Conference playoffs in West Long Branch, New Jersey beginning Friday.
Just one minute into Friday’s road match with Quinnipiac, Temple’s Kathryn Edgar set up a teammate for the first goal of what would turn out to be a 3-2 overtime loss for the Owls. They finished the season 7-10 with a 3-0 victory over LIU on Sunday. Edgar, a senior from Craigavon, Co. Armagh, contributed two goals and two assists this season.
FOOTBALL
Ben Kiernan was called on for two punts in North Carolina’s 38-31 loss to Virginia in Chapel Hill, North Carolina on Saturday. The Dublin freshman got off punts of 43 and 35 yards, and stuck one inside the Virginia 20-yard line. The Tar Heels (4-5) next play Pittsburgh on Thursday, November 14.
SOCCER (MEN)
Ryan Goldsmith set up what turned out to be the winning goal as Richie Grant’s Bakersfield State crew held off Kansas City, 2-1, in Missouri on Friday. Goldsmith, a senior from Cork, then accounted for all the scoring in Sunday’s 2-0 win over Houston Baptist. He now has seven goals to go with four assists for the Roadrunners (7-9-0).
Let’s hear it for Roscrea. The County Tipperary town had plenty to cheer last week, starting with Val Feeney’s goal in Young Harris College’s 4-0 win over Flagler at home on Saturday. The senior found the net with a blast from 30 yards out for his first goal of the campaign. The Mountain Lions are now 10-3-0.
Then, Roscrea freshman Kevin Fitzgerald found a teammate with a pass that led to a goal and sent Emmanuel College’s road match against Chowan into overtime on Saturday. Chowan went on to prevail in the extra period for a 2-1 win. Emmanuel fell to 8-6-1.
Matt Whelan scored both goals, his sixth and seventh of the season, to lead Davenport past Northern Michigan, 2-1, in Marquette, Michigan on Friday. Whelan is a sophomore from Cork. The Panthers are 9-6-1.
Aaron Molloy assisted on two of Penn State’s three goals, including the match winner, in a 3-2 overtime victory over Maryland at home last Tuesday. He is a senior from Dublin. The Nittany Lions are growling at 11-2-3.
Aaron McCreedy earned an assist on Tiffin’s third goal in a 3-0 road win over Walsh on Thursday. He is a sophomore from Raphoe, Co. Donegal. The Dragons are breathing fire at 8-4-3.
Conor McCoy was credited with an assist on Quinnipiac’s first goal in a 4-3 overtime win against Siena last Wednesday. He is a senior from Forkhill, Co. Armagh. The Bobcats are 8-5-3.
Evan Finnegan, a senior from Dublin, got credit for an assist in Keiser University’s 3-1 win over Warner in Lake Wales, Florida on Saturday. The Seahawks are now 9-5-0.
Dylan O’Kane was good for an assist on the first and winning goal in Wingate’s 5-0 whitewash of Salem at home last Wednesday. O’Kane is a senior from Bangor, Co. Down. The Bulldogs are 9-2-3.
SOCCER (WOMEN)
Jenny Nagle, a junior from Mallow, Co. Cork, notched her fourth goal of the season to lead Cardinal Stritch past Robert Morris (Ill.), 1-0, in Milwaukee last Wednesday. Stritch is now 11-5-1.
Amanda McQuillan, a sophomore from Johnstown, Co. Meath, made four saves in goal to help Central Connecticut State defeat Sacred Heart, 2-1, in Fairfield, Connecticut on Sunday. Mick D’Arcy’s Blue Devils are 10-4-4.
Hannah Doherty put Elon on the scoreboard with a goal in the seventh minute of Friday’s Colonial Athletic Association quarterfinal match with Northeastern in Hempstead, New York. The Phoenix prevailed, 2-1, but fell, 3-1, in the championship match to Hofstra. Doherty is a junior from Crumlin, Co. Antrim. Elon finished the season 12-6-2.
