OLDEST IRISH AMERICAN NEWSPAPER IN USA, ESTABLISHED IN 1928

Midwest Irish 100 Awards

Announcing the inaugural Midwest Irish 100

Our Irish ancestors shaped Midwest America, leaving their indelible mark as they moved westward from the bustling cities of the east coast, and southward from the Dominions of Canada, in search of a better life.

The great Midwest cities those early Irish Americans helped build — cities like Chicago, Milwaukee, Minneapolis-St Paul, St. Louis, Omaha, Detroit and Cleveland — symbolize, geographically and emotionally, the very heart of America.

Over time, they also became heartlands of a growing Irish America and to such an extent that from North Dakota to Michigan, from Nebraska to Illinois, there is, today, no area of meaningful endeavor in which the Irish do not hold positions of prominence.

Until now, the contribution of Irish America to the rise of the Midwest and the contribution of the Midwest to Irish America, haven’t been properly acknowledged.

We plan to put that right in this 1916 centenary year in conjunction with an event which is itself an exemplar: the Irish Fest of Milwaukee, the summer’s biggest celebration of Irishness.

The Midwest Irish 100 event, to be held in Milwaukee on Friday, August 19, will honor 100 exceptional Irish Americans from a broad range of fields and a swathe of States.

Despite the different professions and callings being saluted, all honorees will share a pride in their Irish heritage, and a commitment to public service.
