February 16, 2011

By Staff Reporter

The service, which first started in September 2000, was suspended just a year later in the aftermath of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks on the U.S.
Flights will resume between BWI and Shannon/Dublin at the end of next March
“Aer Lingus intends to commence direct services to Shannon with continuing service to Dublin on March 30, 2003. The route will operate daily except Tuesdays and Saturdays,” Aer Lingus said in a statement.
“We are very pleased to be returning scheduled services to Ireland from BWI,” said Aer Lingus executive vice president Jack Foley.
Foley attended a ceremony last week at BWI that was also attended by Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, Maryland’s lieutenant governor and gubernatorial candidate.
Maryland’s outgoing governor, Parris Glendening, has welcomed the return of Aer lingus to BWI.
“Reestablishing direct flights to Ireland will expand Maryland’s gateway to the world and enhance our ability to participate in the global economy,” Glendening said
He said that the state of Maryland was committed to working with Aer Lingus in the restoration of its service to BWI
“We look forward to seeing their distinctive emerald green Aer Lingus jets at BWI very soon,” he said.
Aer Lingus also suspended its service out of Newark in the aftermath of 9/11. However, the carrier has no plans at present to resume services out of the New Jersey airport.
Meanwhile, Aer lingus has announced new winter arrival and departure times affecting its flights into and out of JFK in New York. One of the more notable changes is that the EI 105 flight, which traditionally left Dublin at noon, will now depart Dublin at 10.30 a.m. and arrive at Kennedy at 1 p.m. The new scheduled times took effect at the beginning of this week.
