Bronx Women’s Soccer Lansdowne grab 1st place

In a battle of the league’s top two teams, both clubs had early opportunities, but it wasn’t until Lansdowne asserted themselves in the second half that the game was decided.

On 55 minutes Lansdowne went forward with a ball from Fiona Ward to Stephanie Bliss in the box. Bliss was fouled, but Ellen McGrail, taking the penalty, shot wide. Undeterred, Lansdowne kept applying pressure and finally broke through when McGrail’s throw-in to the box found Stephanie Bliss, who flicked the ball into the net.

Beal Bocht had one more golden opportunity on 66 minutes, but Mary Touhey’s shot from 30 yards went inches wide.

Best for Lansdowne: Megan Flynn, Fiona Ward, Ellen McGrail.

Best for Beal Bocht: Mary Touhey, Siobhan Brennan, Mary McEvoy.

J.J. Gilligan’s 2, Velocity 1

After being denied twice in the early going, J.J. Guilligan’s got on the board on 25 minutes when Melissa Peskin scored on a 25-yard free kick after Lupe Hernandez was fouled.

Velocity got into the game on 32 minutes. Judith Stiles started a move and passed the ball to Regina Newman, who flicked it on to Julia Stiles, who took a shot but was well saved by Caroline Murphy, leaving the halftime score, 1-0.

On 55 minutes, Gilligan’s won a corner. Melissa Peskin took the shot. Teresa Doyle hit a shot that rebounded off the Velocity defense, but Germonia Eryges was there to tap it in, giving her team a 2-0 edge.

Velocity ralled 14 minutes later, when Julia Stiles passed to Cynthia Silva, who scored to make it 2-1.

Best for Gilligans: Francis Brennan, Melissa Peskin, Deirdre O’Sullivan.

Best for Velocity: Cynthia Silva, Regina Newman, Jenny Millar.

Fagan’s 0, Parlour Moms 0

This was a tight game with each team narrowly missing numerous opportunities. On 20 minutes, Derval Carey of Fagan’s passed to Petrona Ariola, who turned the defense and shot a ball that was well saved by Parlour Moms keeper Robyn Mieizwa.

On 30 minutes, Parlour Moms went forward as Sheri Lawson gathered the ball on the 40-yard-line, raced past two defenders and took a shot that was turned away by Alison Leydon.

It appeared that the deadlock was broken on 45 minutes, when Fagan’s Petrona Ariola passed to Angie Allen, whose shot beat the keeper, but the ball hit the crossbar. Down on the line it looked like a goal, but the referee said no.

Best for Fagans: Alison Leydon, Mary Carney, Michelle Doherty.

Best for Parlour Moms: Sheri Lawson, Karen Rice, Melissa Stevens.

Harps 0, Fiona’s 0

Before the start of this game there was a minute’s silence for Maire Curran Melly , whose father died last week.

Best for Harps: Siobhan O’Neill, Martina Duffy, Alison Kaye.

Best for Fionas: Mags Ryan, Hillary Kelly, Erin Tracey.
