Dundalk-based Cross Border Orchestra will perform in the world-famous classical music on Nov. 1 with a choir of 300 New York school children and some of Ireland’s foremost musical talent, including singer Kathy Nugent, tenor Emmanuel Lawler and Uilleann piper Patrick Martin.
The tour will also include a performance at Boston Symphony Hall on Nov. 4, where the orchestra will be joined by 300 youth singers from local schools.
Following the first IRA ceasefire in 1994, schoolteacher Sharon Treacy-Dunne set up the orchestra as a peace building initiative. It is now one of Ireland’s most successful orchestras, comprising 138 school children from Protestant and Catholic backgrounds from around the border counties.
