BOSTON — Former U.S. Ambassador to the Vatican in the Clinton administration Raymond L. Flynn, a life-long Democrat, is publicly supporting George W. Bush for president. Flynn said Monday that in the coming days he will be urging fellow Democrats and Catholic voters to get behind Bush’s candidacy.

"I’ve decided to put my country and my Catholic faith above politics, and I’m encouraging others to do the same," said Flynn, who is president of the National Catholic Alliance.

Flynn said that he has met with Bush and several of his aides in recent months. "I’m convinced that he is genuinely committed to the peace process in Northern Ireland, and I have a strong pro-life position, which is consistent with the governor’s" he said.

"This will be the first time I’ve ever voted Republican, but I think it’s very important that we have this change in leadership."

Flynn said that he plans to travel to Pittsburgh this week to make his views known at gatherings of the Knights of Columbus and other organizations.
