Gaels’ tourney continues

The Astoria Gaels’ in-house tourney continued last Tuesday night at the Astoria Complex, with four more games up on the schedule.

First up was Jimmy Ralph’s team against Eugene Kyne’s squad and it was a cracker. Kyne himself opened the scoring with a drive in the right corner. But Mark Kelly equalized with a fine solo effort. In the second half, Ralph and Werner Lederer added two more to take the points despite a good display by Brendan Donoghue returning from suspension.

Derek McKenna’s squad had a 5-2 win over Donal Walsh’s team in Game 2. This game was marked by two goals from Mark Bourke and a return to soccer after a 12-month layoff due to injury by Sean Rice. Scoring for Walsh were Nestor, Allen and John Beirne.

Game 3 was a physical affair between Ralph’s and Walsh’s squads, with the former winning, 5-2, to take maximum points and lead the league. Vivion White and Lederer again led the way with three goals between them. The tackles were sometimes hard in this one and players from both sides were lucky not to be in the sin-bin.

In the final game, Kyne’s squad lost again, this time to McKenna’s, 5-2. In a game where Rob Winegar scored two and one from Rice, McKenna has his team in second place and looking dangerous.
