Harps hold out against Béal Bocht

February 16, 2011

By Staff Reporter

The battle of this year’s summer soccer league finalists resulted in a decisive win for champions Harps, scoring three goals over opponents Béal Bocht.

Harps got off to a great start with the fastest goal ever scored in the Bronx league. There was just four seconds on the clock when Catherine Donaghue took a pass from Norma McCarthy to plant her shot into the bottom of the net.

Béal Bocht didn’t know what hit them and this resulted in them almost losing a second goal when a Nora McFadden shot was well saved by the Bocht keeper.

As the half wore on, Béal Bocht began to find their composure and began to create some chances. Béal Bocht forwards Varina Carney and Sophia Harvey were starting to find holes in Harps defense but good goalkeeping by Harps’s keeper Chris Gallagher kept Béal Bocht scoreless.

Five minutes before half-time, a pass by Miriam Peters to Norma McCarthy allowed the Harps midfielder to break toward the Béal Bocht goal and her well-placed shot produced the Harps second goal.

Just seven minutes into the second half, the Harps added to their score when a hand ball resulted in a penalty, which Nancy Manfredonia easily converted.

Still, Béal Bocht kept fighting and were rewarded with a brilliant goal by the impressive Sophia Harvey.

Pauline Boylan and Lyn Pinezion were outstanding in keeping their team Béal Bocht in the game.

Harps have now stretched their lead at the top to three points.

Parlour 1, Southbend 1

In a hard fought match between two teams that like to play football, a draw seemed to be the right result.

The Parlour took the lead through Wendy Hollender after some fine play from Linda Rice.

However, Southbend equalized when Alison Lineen converted

a penalty.

Fionas 3, Lansdowne 2

In the most exciting match of the day, Fiona’s ran out winners against their arch rivals Lansdowne.

Lansdowne, despite having only 10 players, took the lead through Bernadette Boyle but Fiona’s were able to fight back and led at half time with two goals by Michele Davis.

Fionas continued to pressure Lansdowne and were rewarded with a third goal by Ann Ryan.

Lansdowne didn’t lie down and, with 10 minutes left, scored a second through Loretta Duffy.
