Lansdowne win Bronx women’s cup final

Lansdowne collected their second trophy this year as Stephanie Darby’s goal four minutes into extra time propelled her team to a 1-0 victory, and the Bronx Women’s Soccer League title, over Beal Bocht at Van Cartlandt Park at the weekend.

Lansdowne started fast. After five minutes Lansdowne went forward. Bernie Boyle took a shot on goal only to be deflected for a corner. After 10 minutes, Lansdowne won a free kick out 30 yards, which was taken by Melissa Mann, whose effort beat the wall only to be well saved by Breda O’Neill in the Beal Bocht goals.

Beal Bocht then got into the game. Mary McEvoy passed the ball to Sophia Harvey, whose shot went inches wide. After 20 minutes, Lansdowne had a corner, and the ball was well headed by Boyle only to be saved by O’Neill. On 33 minutes, Ellen McGrail had a shot on goal for Lansdowne that went inches wide. The half ended scoreless.

The start of the second half Lansdowne went forward, pressing for goal with shots by Melissa Mann, Stephanie Bliss and Boyle well saved by O’Neill. On 40 minutes, Beal Bocht went forward with a ball from Brenda Walsh to Pauline Boylan, whose shot went over the crossbar. On 60 minutes, Lansdowne went forward with a high ball in to Bliss, who turned the Beal Bocht defense and took the shot only to be saved by O’Neill.

After four minutes extra time, Lansdowne’s Boyle gathered the ball and passed to Darby, who hit a low shot into right-hand corner of net for the decisive score.

Beal Bocht fought back. On 11 minutes, Mary Touhey had a shot on goal that went inches wide. On 17 minutes, Lansdowne’s Mann’s shot hit the post. Beal Bocht kept going forward but to no avail.

Best for Lansdowne: Bernie Boyle, Stephanie Darby, Ellen McGrail.

Best for Beal Bocht: Breda O’Neill, Mary Touhey, Marlese Fath.
