LGAA PreviewOn home turf, Rockland look to knock off Mayo

Due to the weekend’s poor weather conditions, all New York Ladies GAA Ladies games were postponed. They will be rescheduled for mid-week.

Meanwhile, on Sunday, May 17, the women will be play in Rockland County at the Rockland PHYSC fields. Here’s a look at the upcoming action:

Monaghan vs. An Chiarrai1:30 p.m.

The opening game should prove to be a close encounter as both teams will be anxious to win the points, particularly Monaghan, who have yet to gain points this season. An Chiarrai will look to the talents of Mary Kearney-Cooney, Mary Tuohy, Marlese Fath, Ann Hanrahan and Patricia O’Brien, among others, to take their team to victory. Monaghan, on the other hand, will rely on an all-round team effort, with players like midfielder Norma McCarthy, Michelle Davis, Mary Nash, Catherine Donohoe, Marie Flood and Maudy Lynn to give their all on the day.

Cavan vs. Na Fianna2:45 p.m.

In the second game, rivals Cavan and Na Fianna battle for the points. With the talents of Rosie O’Reilly, Olive Wilson, Karen Shalvey, Olive Lynch, Pauline Coleman, Catherine Russell, Justine Clifford and Caroline O’Sullivan, Cavan will hope for victory. Na Fianna will not bow down easy and will hope to do as Leitrim did and claim the points for their own. Names to watch out for on the Na Fianna side are Caroline Conway, Ann Murray, Maree Maloney, Marie Curran, Mary McEvoy and Mary Kearney.

Rockland vs. Mayo4 p.m.

This last game should be another close one as both teams are playing great football this season. Rockland, in their home grounds, have gotten the reputation of a skillful passing team and have great talent in Claire Charlton, Mags Dineen, Shauna Reilly, Cathy Dunleavy, KerryAnn Galvin, Coleen McElroy and Kelly Gorman. Mayo are also abundant in talented players like Teresa O’Malley, Fiona Ward, Ellen and AnnMarie McGrail, Mary Toolan, Cathy and Joanne McKenna and Eilish Doherty and will be hoping to continue collecting the valuable league points.

Directions to Rockland PHYSC field: Take Exit 13S (Palisades Parkway) of the N.Y. State Thruway (after Tappan Zee Bridge). Take Palisades Parkway to Exit 6W (Orangeburg Road). At Exit, go through light, make third right after light (Old Orangeburg Road). Look for sign for Rockland PHYSC. Make a left, make first right onto Rockland Physc (speed limit is 20 mph). Go to end, make last left that you can make, go straight and field and parking lot on the right.
