St. Barnabas vs. Tyrone

Tyrone’s juniors will try to duplicate their senior team’s fine opening performance when they tackle St. Barnabas in next Sunday’s opener at Gaelic Park. Branabas are making the leap from Junior B as last year’s champions and might just make an impression on the Junior A division.

Limerick vs. Tipperary

Limerick will open the defense of their title against old rivals Tipperary, a match that rarely disappoints. Limerick stalwarts Finbar Flood, Tom and Dave Sims, Donal Fitsgibbons, and Tadgh Callaghan will be buttressed by the addition of Ted O’Halpin, brother of Sean O’G. Tipp counter with Owen Cummins, Kevin Kennedy and John Madden, among others. It should be a good one.

Kerry vs. Westmeath

Kerry and Westmeath meet in this Senior A football match, featuring two sides hoping to improve on last season’s performances. Kerry feature the Riney brothers, Peter and Adrian, Paul Gallagher, Bingo Jamie and John O’Driscoll. Westmeath look to Peter Dalton, Gareth and Dave Baile, Frank Kavanagh, and the ever-reliable Brian McCabe.

Monaghan vs. Rockland

These teams are always contenders in this division and 2002 is unlikely to be an exception. Monaghan have a strong lineup, led by Mickey and Martin Slowey and Bonnie Duffy. Rockland will count on Tommy Acton and Barney Healy, but maybe hurt by the loss of Fisher Fitzgerald, who is now back playing with Westmeath.
