Meat eaters wanted

The Irish meat commission, Bord Bia, has launched a web site to restore public confidence in Irish beef.

After the disruptions due to Foot and Mouth disease, all European Union countries are required to provide an online service to reassure the public. Ireland is the first country to go live with its web site, located at: www.bordbia.ie/qualitybeef.

The web sites will provide information on trace ability, labeling, nutrition and other information. An overview of the importance of zinc, iron, protein and B-vitamins is also included, as is an explanation of the way beef can provide these essential nutrients.

Additional information about the importance of beef in teenage diets, beef and pregnancy, beef and infants, beef and toddlers, and iron deficiency and anemia is provided, with links to nutritional information on the Bord Bia website.

Beef and meat consumption fell by 13 percent in 2000-2001, according to Bord Bia, largely due to the foot and mouth epidemic.
