Ireland’s Kevin McBride made an impressive return to the ring with a first-round knockout of Rhode Island’s Domingo Munroe in Boston last Saturday. The Monaghan heavyweight, now under the guidance of former Marvelous Marvin Hagler trainer Goody Petronelli, hadn’t fought for over a year, but he took only 50 seconds to put paid to Munroe.

McBride, who is expected to fight again in Rhode Island next month, has 20 knockouts from his 27 fights.

Asked if he could turn out to be the next Gerry Cooney, McBride’s co-trainer, Michael Joyce, said: "I have no doubt that he will be the next great white hope."
