Cavan 2-8, Leitrim 2-6

With first place in the championship at stake both teams gave a tremendous effort. Leitrim, having beaten Cavan two weeks earlier, were determined to take top place, but Cavan were out for revenge. Leitrim were first of the mark with points from Clare Tracey and Moira Grogan. They were unlucky to lose Ann Maire McMunn, who went off injured in the first few minutes. Cavan’s first score came from a free kick from Gillian Bennett, who finished 1-7 with six points from free kicks.

Leitrim continued to battle and worked the ball into full forward Clare Treacy, who made a great catch in front of the goal. She was tackled and the referred awarded a penalty which Sadie Bolger stepped up the take and put the ball in the back of the net. As play continued Cavan worked themselves back into the game with Gillian Bennett converting her second free kick and a great point from Catherine McAteer, who took here shot from a difficult angle.

Maintaining possession in their forward line, Cava’s Gillian Bennett went for her third point, but it came off the post back into her hands in front of the goal and she buried it in the back of net and the ladies in Blue were back in contention, finishing the first half up by two points.

Cavan increased their lead with a goal from Catherine McAteer who took her shot from the end line and three points from sharp shooter Gillian Bennett. Leitrim were determined to make it back into the game with points from Kathleen Walsh and Moira Grogan bridging the gap somewhat. Then a goal and a point from Sadie Bolger put them right back in the game. Down a mere two points they tried hard and in hindsight could have drawn or even won the game as they kept pressure on the Cavan back line for the last few minutes. But Cavan held out and took the championship points to put the top of the table with maximum points. For both sides it was an all round team effort with outstanding play from Leitrims Una Burke, Moira Grogan and Colette McElligot and Cavan’s Justine Clifford, Gillian Bennett and Colette McAteer.
