North’s sensors save organs

Groundbreaking medical discoveries put Northern Irish medical researchers in the news this week.

Researchers at the University of Ulster developed tiny sensors that allow transplant organs to be transported in perfect condition. The sensors would detect any deterioration of the organs and alert medical staff.

Until now, the only method of checking on a transplant organ’s condition was by eye. Organs have to be stored carefully and transported quickly, otherwise they deteriorate and decay.

“Something which has in the past been a bit of an art is now having a scientific application,” Dr. Eric Adams said.

“They are carried in what are essentially elaborate cooler boxes, and surgeons have to determine if the organs are in a suitable condition when they arrive in the operating theater.”
