O’Hanlon Candidacy: What happens next?

Firstly, a Seanad by-election will be declared to fill the seat. In such a contest, only county and city councilors can vote.
To get onto the ballot, a candidate must be formally nominated by one of the official “nominating bodies,” or by a member of the Oireachtas. Political analysts in Dublin say a candidate of the caliber of Ray O’Hanlon would attract multiple nominations.
