Saints march in behind Meaney

February 16, 2011

By Staff Reporter

St. Barnabas 6-9

Down 1-10

The St. Barnabas and Down junior footballers had the unenviable task of following the first-ever New York-based championship match featuring a New York team. Despite the surrounding hype, it was an especially important match for the Ulster side, already having one in the loss column.

Barnabas, of course, came into this encounter undefeated at 1-0 and they never looked like losing today. Barnabas took the initiative, rushing to a 3-6 to 1-2 interval lead. Barnabas certainly have adjusted well since annexing the Junior B title. With players like Ronan Garvey, Dave O’Halloran, Sean Carbin, Tony Nolan, Johnathan Daly and Darren Meaney, the Saints are an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Darren Meaney was the danger man on this occasion, hammering home three goals for Barnabas. Mick Dobbins countered with an impressive 1-6 for Down, but his running mates were not as prolific as Meaney’s, and so Down fell.

Man of the match: Darren Meaney.
