It’s a DoubleClick shuffle.

Irish American Kevin Ryan, the Manhattan-based online advertising firm’s 36-year-old president and chief operating officer, has been appointed to the post of chief executive. He replaces Kevin O’Connor, 39, who continues in his role as chairman.

O’Connor founded DoubleClick in 1996 with Dwight Merriman, now the company’s chief technology officer.

Last June, DoubleClick merged with Abacus Direct, a consumer database company founded by County Monaghan man Tony White. At the time, the combination of DoubleClick’s online ad serving technologies combined with Abacus treasure trove of consumer data aroused the concern of privacy advocates. The company subsequently said it would not connect people’s names, addresses and other personal information with the data it collects about where they surf on the web.

DoubleClick sells advertising space to hundreds of web sites and also offers a service, called DART, that delivers online ads to specific web pages.
