Toledo’s Jones, Kent’s Gillen win tournaments

Toledo’s David Jones shot a final round 69 to post a one-stroke victory in the Bruce Fossum-Spartan Invitational at the Forest Akers Country Club in East Lansing, Mich. Toledo also won the team trophy by nine strokes over Illinois.

Jones, a junior from Derry, carded 216 (73-74-69) for 54 holes to stave off the Illini’s Garrett Chaussard. Sean McTernan, a junior from Sligo, and Alan Murray, a senior from Bray, Co. Wicklow, also contributed to the Rockets’ victory. McTernan shot 220 (71-75-74) to finish tied for sixth place, while Murray’s 225 (73-76-76) was good for a piece of 18th place.

Kent State’s Martina Gillen won the Mid American Conference Women’s Championship by six strokes over teammate Leigh Ann Griffin. Gillen, a Dublin sophomore, shot 219 (74-71-74) for 54 holes. Kent won the team title by 66 strokes over Ohio. The event took place at Walden Ponds Golf Club in Hamilton, Ohio.

Gr’me McDowell tied for 13th place in the Conference USA Men’s Championship at The Club at Hidden Creek in Navarre, Fla. McDowell, a junior from Portrush, Co. Antrim, carded 216 (72-71-73) for 54 holes. Texas Christian’s Bret Guetz was low man with 205. TCU also won the team title, with UAB placing sixth.

Gareth Maybin was one of three South Alabama golfers to tie for fourth place at the Sun Belt Conference Men’s Championship at Bluewater Bay Resort in Niceville, Fla. Maybin, a freshman from Co. Antrim, shot 219 (75-71-73) to finish six strokes behind medalist Jon Babich of New Mexico State. South Alabama won the championship by six shots over New Mexico State.

Northeast Louisiana’s Mark O’Sullivan took 14th place with his 225 (73-74-78) in the Southland Conference Men’s Championship at Twin Lakes Golf Club in Canton, Texas. The Salthill, Co. Galway junior finished nine shots behind champion Mark Van Hoose from Lamar. Southeast Louisiana finished fourth among teams, with Lamar on top.

Campbell won the Atlantic Sun Conference’s Women’s Championship by five strokes over Central Florida at Mission Inn’s El Campeon Course at Howie-In-The-Hills, Fla. Aida Burke helped Campbell with her 243 (87-76-80), which placed her 15th among individuals. Burke is a sophomore from Coolasmuttane, Co. Cork. Florida Atlantic’s Jessica Polus was low woman with 222.
