A flat Shamrock was tossed out of the Manning Cup by Jamaican club Rovers, who beat the Cosmopolitan Soccer League First Division side 3-1 at Randalls Island last Sunday.
"We were never really in the game," Shamrock assistant coach John Guildea said. "They were a nice side, knocked the ball around well, and skillful. Overall, we have no complaints."
The Sunnyside men were still able to produce a late flourish that saw them hit the bar, appeal for a penalty, and get a consolation goal through Tim Cummins (80th).
The Shamrocks Reserves, with Guildea running the midfield, breezed past East Meadow 4-1 in the Heidecker Cup first round.
They did it in style after falling behind in the 51st minute. Two goals in as many minutes, by Brendan O’Reilly (57th), who intercepted an errant back pass, and a spectacular overhead kick by Scotsman George O’Boyle (58th), got them going. Dennis O’Boyle (68th, no relation to George) killed off the Long Islanders.

"We won fairly easily, as the scoreline suggests," Guildea said.
Gaels goalless
Astoria Gaels were held to a goalless draw by ASA McCarthy in a Metro Div. II affair at McCarren Park. "Good game. Enjoyable," manager Jimmy Ralph summed up.
Sean Hall netted a face-saver for Lansdowne Bhoys in their 4-1 drubbing by Central Park Rangers at Van Cortland Park. Phil Godwin, PaoloEnrico, Furquan Hasan and Tony Bennett tallied for Rangers.
NYAC comeback
New York Athletic Club, semifinalists two years ago, passed the first hurdle of the U.S. National Amateur Cup at a canter, with a 4-0 victory over Second Division Ripensia-Romania at Travers Island.
Matt Roberti (10th), Dan Hatter (55th), Stephan Greenburg (60th) and Dominic Hardy (75th) connected. The result was an atonement of sorts for the previous week’s 3-0 loss to Koha.
"If we show this form in the league, we’ll do OK," said NYAC coach Ronan Down.
Also, in the U.S. Amateur Cup, Fairfield/Westchester were pipped 1-0 by New York Greek-American/Atlas at Downing Stadium.
Herculean effort
New York Albanians played two games within 19 hours and won them both. Albanians started by edging CSL First Division leaders Pancyprian Freedoms 1-0 on Paul Nikac’s strike (70th) on Saturday night, then motored to Hicksville early Sunday afternoon where they triumphed 3-2 in the Manning Cup.
Pancyprian took the reserve match against Albanians 3-1.
Former St. Barnabas striker Tony Camaj was the Albanian hero in Long Island, with a hat trick.
Koha, minus key strikers Fatos Selimi and Qazim Hakramaj, were saved from defeat in a league match against Polonia by Herolind Hajdari’s late brace (70th, 90th). Marcin Poeielski had both goals for Polonia in the 2-all tie at Cantiague Park.
Understrength
Raf’l SanMartin’s woes continued at the SUNY-Maritime field where his luckless CD Iberia were below strength against fellow stragglers Banatul and made to pay. Sebastien Agis and Jose Rodriguez scored for Iberia in a 3-2 loss.
"My players didn’t show up, and I only had six starters," SanMartin said.
Kickers edged
Second Division (East) front-runners Manhattan Kickers bowed out of the Manning Cup via a 3-2 decision at the hands of Glen Cove. Scott Conti was one of Kickers’ scorers.
Guyana Juniors cut Kickers’ lead in the league to two points with a 4-1 mauling of FC Japan at Canarsie Beach. Christopher Stuart (two) and Christopher Giles were among the Guyana scorers. The reserves tied 2-all.
At Roosevelt Island, Lo Noliage struck twice for New York Wanderers in a 3-2 losing effort against Barnstonworth Rovers.
"We had 10 no-shows and six guys played 90 minutes in both games," reported coach Wanderers Eamon Reynolds, whose reserves lost 3-0.
Nag’s point
Orlando Paz ended Nag’s Head United’s run of poor form by clinching a point against S.C. Eintracht with his 65th minute equalizer. The goal canceled out Andy Doczy’s earlier strike (53rd) at Randalls. Eintracht’s reserves prevailed 2-1.
Ridgewood held off Central Park Rangers 4-2 in a clash of the West’s top two teams at Grover Cleveland High School. The reserves drew 0-0.
Rangers trailed 4-0 at one point but then reeled off two straight goals through Marcio Goncalves (60th), and Jason Costa (72nd). Robert Cretulescu (22nd), Dan Ciabuca (35th), Tasi Iorgoveanu (55th) and Eduard Laibner (65th pen.) were the Ridgewood marksmen.
"It’s our first loss. They’re a good side. It was tough," said Rangers’ Paul Clayton.
Roaring Dinamo
Argentine Santiago Verzi (10th, 60th), Ivan Munoz (35th, 70th) and the prolific Murem Ibrahimov (40th) powered New York Dinamo to a 5-1 rout over Bergen Kickers at Overpeck County Park. Dinamo’s reserves won 3-0.
Solar power
Sunnyside were also 5-1 winners over Barnstonworth Rovers at Randalls Island. Onder Koksol chalked up a hat trick, while Cen Sahin and Salih Cakirca chipped in with a goal each for the Metro Division I leaders.
Over-30 State Cup
George Lesmes connected twice (18th, 75th penalty) to lead BW Gottschee into the second round. His first goal, in a 2-1 win over Garden City, was a simple tap in from a Pablo Perez cross.
Guyana Veterans "A" thrashed Hota Bavarians 5-0 to join Gottschee in the second round. Junior Walker (two), Jerry Lee, David Simpson and Ashley Clark tallied.
Metros advance
"About time," GH Metros boss Rory Finn exclaimed after his side knocked off Lindenhurst 3-2 in their Over-30 tie. Steve Bodden, Clerio Braga and John Grasser were on target for Metros.
Greeks out
Despite goals by their talismanic forward Jose Luis Leva and Nick Tassos, New York Greek-American/Atlas were bundled out of the Over-30 State Cup 5-2 by Massapequa.
In the league, Scala Brasil trounced Guyana Veterans "B" 8-0 at Canarsie Beach.
