The U2 singer’s reputation for social activism stretches back to the early 1980s, when the band threw its support behind Amnesty International. Thus far, he’s been able to avoid the dilettante label that dogs Sean “Wacky for Iraqi” Penn, by aligning himself with heavy hitters like former Secretary of the Treasury Paul O’Neill and Harvard Prof. Jeffrey Sachs. Besides, what better way to connect with his New Wave/Punk roots than by teaming up with the former Clash front man, who died suddenly last weekend of a suspected heart attack at the age of 50.
