Name: Dennis J. Ryan

Biography: ORIGINALLY a police officer with the National County Police Department in New York, forensics expert Dennis Ryan worked in the police laboratory examining criminal documents such as threat notices and bank robbery notes. As a result, the father-of-two would be called to testify in court as an expert in his field for criminal trials. Mr Ryan from Merrick, New York carried out this role for 16 years before deciding to set up his own private business in 2003 that would see him specialise in both criminal and civil cases.“I already had my own business outside the police department since 1990 examining civil and non-criminal documents,” he said. “These would be documents like last will and testaments or real estate documents but I left the police to devote my time solely on my own practice.”

Within two years Mr Ryan had set up his own company, Applied Forensics, which now has four offices in total handling up to 100 cases each year.

“In 2008 I opened an office in Washington DC and took on two other experts to work in that office while in 2010 we opened our Boston office,” he said. “I had to take on another member of staff to cover the New York office while I concentrated on Boston. Later that year though, we took on two experts in counterfeit documents, as although I had knowledge in that field these people were very specialised. And in 2011 Applied Forensics opened its fourth office, this time in Connecticut.”

Mr Ryan said he must have a passion for forensic science or he wouldn’t be doing 60-hour weeks.

“I guess I must have a passion for it because I am well beyond the 9 to 5pm job,” he said. “We have just been growing and growing – I don’t know how to say no.”
